Q: How do I figure gallons of water in my pond?
A: Multiply Length X Width X Depth X 7.48 = gallons of water in pond.

Q: Do I need to gravel the inside of my pond?
A: Ask someone who has cleaned one out! It makes a HUGE mess. Use larger, round, smooth stones and it will clean out easier. Use smooth, large pebble in waterfalls, streams and bogs.

Q: How often should I clean my skimmer?
A: At least twice a week, or when ever it is dirty. Skimmer baskets will fill faster during the fall when the leaves and debris are falling in the pond. Check often, if the basket gets so full that it clogs the water to the pump, the pump could overheat and blow.

Q: Why do I need plants in my pond?
A: Aquatic plants are a major part of your ecosystem. Look at them like a biological filter. Plants use nutrients from your water to keep it clean. Without them your water would be murky and smell.

Q: Are there any conditons I should avoid for water lillies?
A: Water lillies do not like water splashing on their leaves, keep them away from fountains and waterfalls. They will also need to be fertilized regularly and need about 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

Q: Will plants reduce the amount of algae I have?
A: YES! The more plants you have in your pond, the more nutrients are being used up, and the more surface area is covered, which means less algae.

Q: What do you do with fish in the winter?
A: You can leave them in your pond providing your pond is deep enough, (18"-24"), keep a hole open in the ice and the water moving. The reason there needs to be a hole in the ice is to provide proper gas exchange.

Q: When should I stop feeding fish?
A: Don't feed your fish when the water temperature is below 55 degrees, because the fish metabolism is slowed down and won't be able to process food. Use Spring/Fall Diet fish food in cooler tempuratures.

Q: How do I add new fish to my pond?
A: Float the bag in the pond for about 15 minutes. This allows the water temperature in the bag to match the pond water. Note, do not float the bagged fish in the sun. The plastic bag could heat up rather quickly and kill the fish. If you are in total sun, drape wet newspaper over the bag while floating.
